Worst Sentence of the Week
Every week this desk reads a few hundred thousand words of coverage and files the ones that cannot all be true. This page is for a smaller failure: a sentence that does not hold together on its own terms — an actor deleted by the passive voice, a hedge stacked on a hedge, a verb its subject cannot physically perform. The note is about construction and nothing else. It is not a claim that the sentence is false, and it is not a verdict on whoever wrote it: a well-built sentence can be wrong, and a badly-built one can be perfectly true.
Three rules keep it honest. Every sentence is verbatim from a corpus this desk already froze for a published piece, checked to locate before it is filed. The target is always the outlet’s own prose — a newsroom that accurately reproduces someone else’s mangled syntax has done its job, and charging it for the quote would be the cheapest trick on this site. And since 2026-08-12, the diagnosis is checked too: before an entry is filed, a second reader is asked to refute it, the sentence is presumed innocent, and a note that does not survive is thrown away rather than softened. That rule exists because the desk got one wrong and said so.

The sentence says the sheets are flapping, and sheets flap — “of paint” only tells you what they are made of. The note then argued that flapping needs air three words after the sentence said “in the water.” Both refutations were sitting inside the exhibit the desk was holding. Al Jazeera wrote a good sentence and this desk charged it for a bad one.
